Snow Mountains of the Great Apes

In an old map of the Mount Everest region, based on surveys made in 1921, the mountain range was called Mahalangur Himal, which means Snow Mountains of the Great Apes.

While apes are well known in Nepal and Tibet, the natives never speak of the yeti as an ape. They speak only of yeti, kanag-mis, mirkas, or mi-gos. A Sherpa named Tensing, and other Sherpas, stated to a correspondent they believe there are two varieties of yeti. One attacks yaks; the other attacks humans.

The photograph shown was taken by NASA on April 2, 2003.

Refers to the Himalayan monkey, which never exceeds taller than 24-28 inches tall and has a very long tale. They don't attack yaks, except in groups when irritated by passing yak herds. They make loud screaming warning songs when yaks approach.= Langurs or the Maha Langur do not fare well in cold snowy mountain regions of Himalayans, they keep to warmer valleys in tall vegetation and trees.
There are no other great apes in Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan or Sikkim. The tall walking ape, with many names according to region is the yeti. The Langur is a quadruped and yeti biped. Indigenous peoples know the difference.
