African Parrots

Aviculture / Birds

African Parrots

The biggest threat to most avian species is deforestation and the destruction of their native habitats. For this reason, both the authors, Jean Pattison and Rick Jordan, believe that a stronghold of every species of parrot must be established in captivity if their kinds are to survive into the future.

As well, the authors believe that not only must each species be represented in captivity, but also they must be well managed; and these populations must become capable of sustaining themselves in captivity, indefinitely.

This objective can only be reached through sound educational materials that reinforce the concepts of professional captive genetic management for every species now kept in aviculture. The concept of a managed captive population, and good record keeping, prompted the authors to write African Parrots and donate the proceeds to the American Federation of Aviculture, Inc.

For more than twenty years now the AFA has been there to support bird breeders and enthusiasts with information about breeding and legislative matters.

Two of the most respected parrot aviculturists share their combined experiences to introduce us to the indigenous parrot species of Africa.

Rick Jordan and Jean Pattison examine the many facets of the aviculture of these birds including, speculation, breeding behavior, and suitability as companion birds. The authors share their insights and experience with African parrots, making this book a necessity in any bird lover's library.

Rich Jordan, known as an outstanding aviculturist and psittacine incubation expert, has the distinction of having worked with more avian species than any other private aviculturist. He currently operates Hill Country Aviaries, L.L.C. in Dripping Springs, Texas.

Jean Pattison is well known for her work in the aviculture of psittacine birds of African origin. Her advice is widely sought regarding these species and their unique breeding requirements. She currently operates African Queen Aviaries in Lakeland, Florida.
