Loo Falconry - The Royal Loo Hawking Club 1839-1855

Falconry / Raptors

 The Loo Falconry

This book of falconry is indespensible.

In the nineteenth century in Europe, falconry was carried out in a spectacular and vibrant way. And there was no more impressive activity than that taking place at the Dutch palace of the House of Orange-Nassau.

It was there that the Royal Loo Hawking Club came into being. Founded by passionate falconry advocates famous for their Haut Vol falconry, flying falcons at the graceful and high flying heron, all too soon the Club passed into oblivion.

The Loo Falconry celebrates the colorful history and prestige of this international society.

Falconry at The Loo was practised in a spectacular and colourful way and society life at the palace was no less sparkling and vivid. After the activites of the Royal Loo Hawking Club ceased, the last sparks soon died, and so the Club passed into oblivion. True enouch, many historical data were saved, but all too often they were hidden in unknown or barelyl accessible archives.

It is remarkable that such a magnificent, illustrious and international society was never known as weidely and profoundly as might be expected. In falconry circles its existence is still vaguely known. The Club was mentioned in some books and papers, but detailed knowledge was confined to but a very few investigators.

Author Dr. Van de Wall has dug deep into historical records and accounts and offers readers an impressive compilation on the Club, its origins, patrons, falcons and falconers.

In addition to detailed and organized data, the book is filled with magnificent reproductions of watercolors and sketches by J. Wolf, J. B. Sonderland, P. L. Dubourcq and others who recorded pictorially all the facts and events of falconry at The Loo.

This book will amaze you to no ends.

Dr. Van de Wall has had a long-time interest in falconry, particularly the history of the House of Orange-Nassau. After many years, he is very pleased to have this translated edition available to the public. The author currently resides in Leusden, the Netherlands.
