Herons, Bitterns, Rails, and Coot
Herons and bitterns are long necked and legged birds that frequent waterways and feed on aquatic life. They both fly with their necks folded back as opposed to the cranes and geese which keep their neck outstretched during flight. Also frequenting marshes but unrelated to the above group are the rails and coot. While the coot is commonly seen along the pond and lake shores either bobbing up and down to pull up submerged vegetation or grazing along the bordering lawns, the rails are secretive birds only seen by close examination of dense marsh vegetation. |
