ANSHAN (Anshan)
Liaoning Province
Anshan, the steel and iron capital of China, is situated in southeastern Liaoning Province about 90km southwest of Shenyang. The iron mining and smelting industry began around 100 B.C. and expanded during the tenth and eleventh centuries A.D. The rich deposits of iron and coal around this city provide a natural site for industry. Although man factories dominate Anshan, the city is well planned and has wide streets attractively bordered with greenery and flowers.
With a population of 900,000, Anshan also produces construction materials, chemicals, agricultural tools, and consumer goods. In addition, there are many metallurgical institutes in the city.
