RED GROUPER, Epinephelus morio. Grouper. Distinguished from most other groupers by the edges of the membranes between the dorsal spines being slightly curved or nearly straight. Inmost other groupers they are deeply notched. SIZE: To 50 lbs; avg. 4-6 lbs.; over 25 lbs. Unusual. HABITS: Occur from shore to depths of at least 900 ft, sometimes on smooth sand or mud, but most frequently around wrecks or on high relief bottom corral and rocks encrusted with living organisms. SEASON: All year. Fishing is fairly uniform throughout the year. FISHING METHODS: Bottom fishing from anchored or drifting boats. Some caught by jigging or trolling near the bottom. BAITS: Squid, shrimp, cut fish and live fish; also stripbait, weighted bucktails, jigs and feathers.
