Bald Eagle Festivals

Good and Bad Eagle Watching Years and Days!

Each of the eagle areas, their special festival “countday” totals and their general bald eagle viewing opportunities are seasonally and DAILY highly variable, due to weather. If the weather is bad on the “count day” the counts are basically low–the eagles are just not readily observable and the observers get around less. Then there is the seasonal timing and number of salmon in any specific river. Some years the salmon returns are high and the eagles congregate in larger numbers and stay longer. On other years the salmon numbers are down or after extensive rains the rivers wash out the dead salmon very quickly due to rapid runoff and the few eagles leave early. An official “countday” count seldom reflects the maximum number of birds using an area during the season–it only reflects the numbers seen that day.
