Description

In the vast unexplored regions of America exists a living breathing reminder of prehistoric days. He has several names: "Giant Hairy Ape," "Bigfoot," and "Sasquatch." He is the counterpart of the Himalayan "Yeti" or "Abominable Snowman."Yes, there does exist an American Abominable Snowman; he is not a myth or a hoax.Come with me as we seek out the facts about this twentieth-century mystery. Come with me as we travel a rugged road into the unknown a road that will take us from the campfires of Indians and mountain men to the pages of a modern newspaper a road so charged with excitement and steeped in mystery that you'll never forget one exciting mile of the journey.

Author Biography

Roger Patterson was no ordinary filmmaker, he managed to film a shaky 60 second film of a 'Bigfoot' - the creature that the Native Americans call Sasquatch. Patterson was a well respected rodeo rider. During the 1960s he developed an interest in the Bigfoot an unknown creature seen for years in California, Orgeon and Washington, writing a small self-published book. Patterson and his friend Bob Gimlin became famous for their well known Patterson-Gimlin film of a purported Bigfoot/Sasquatch in Bluff Creek, California. Patterson died in 1972, spending every penny he made from the film continuing his search for the creature.

Book Reviews

Roger Patterson's book is a great read with some historic accounts recounted. It is a great piece of work to have on my book shelf, especially knowing that this author is the only one to have ever filmed what is probably a Bigfoot in the forest of Bluff Creek, CA. I would highly suggest this book for anyone interested in the subject of Bigfoot.

The newest offering from Hancock House is a very fascinating look at some of the early history of the Bigfoot legend in America from the man who would, one year after the publication of this tome, film an actual Sasquatch in Bluff Creek, Six Rivers National Forest, Del Norte County, California. Ivan T. Sanderson was also a major influence on Roger (it was Sanderson's article in the December 1959 issue of True Magazine that Roger read which inspired his search), and the title of this book is a modified version of Sanderson's book Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come To Life, published 5 years before. These 5 chapters are chock-full of newspaper clippings, magazine articles and personal interviews from the early days of Bigfoot research in the Pacific Northwest. The Albert Ostman story is recounted here, as is the Ape Canyon and Baumann stories. However, it is obvious that Patterson's fire and passion for the subject is evident throughout the book. He really was very interested in the subject and took it very seriously. He also speaks of track finds and expeditions he himself undertook into the remote areas of the states of California and Washington. Those five chapters, written circa 1966, comprise the first book devoted exclusively to Bigfoot/Sasquatch, which Roger called the Giant Hairy Apes. This book is a worthy addition to any library, and very highly-recommended. It can be purchased at http://www.hancockhouse.com Few more points: It has a good format and follows closely the format of the original. The change of covers does not bother me either, because Film Controversy also used a different cover, and that did not really bother me either. If I were to rank this edition, it would get a 9 out of 10.
